We bought this book a few months ago! I want to pass it forward. It was a quick read and gave lots of ideas on affording adoption without debt! It is Adopt Without Debt by Julie Gumm. Leave a comment and I’ll enter you to win! I’ll draw Thursday night @ 6pm central time!
This book includes story after story of how regular ole’ families like ours with regular ole’ bank accounts like ours afford adoption without going into debt! It can totally be done! Many do not even consider adoption because of the fees involved!
Between our two adoptions, we feel these have been our most successful means of chipping away at our fees: (if you click on the pink links, you’ll go straight to a post with more details about each)
Sold Ugandan Bead Necklaces-all in all, we raised around $5000 with them!! We were super blessed to have many to sell and many people willing to take several and sell them for us at different locations to a variety of people! We still have a handful left!
T-shirts! Twice! We had FAR more success with the most recent sale. We made around $2000 with our LOVE Africa shirts! and those sales were mostly from blog readers (my blog had lots more traffic than way back when) many reading at the time had a vested interest in African adoptions specifically!
GRANTS! With Harrison’s adoption we were blessed with a $3000 grant from ShowHope.
This time, we have been blessed with $1000 from Brittany’s Hope. We will raise $1000 and they will match it with $1000 (we won’t get it until after travel).
$3000 from our agencies SNAF (special needs adoption fund specific to our agencies Waiting Child adoptions)
$600 from SparrowFund to cover our Vanderbilt International Adoption clinic bill for the pre-adoptive medical file review.
For the remainder of our adoption expenses associated with the twins adoption, we are praying for the following….We are waiting to hear back from ShowHope, LifeSong, and AbbaFund and we have our adoption benefit celebration dinner in August!!
We applied for a matching grant with LifeSong. It would be an amazing answer to prayer to be able to use this alongside our benefit dinner & silent auction. We could use the $$ we make at the benefit dinner to be matched through LifeSong that would be AMAZING!
AbbaFund is an organization/ministry that provides interest free loans for families that are adopting. While that would seem like debt, we plan to use our adoption tax credit (x2) to pay any portion of an interest free loan that we might get back! We also only plan to use this (should we be awarded it) should we come up short when it comes to pay our fees in full or to fund our travel expenses if we are in a place of need when the time comes!
We paid over half of our fees at the acceptance of the twins referral. We are also sending at least 1/3 our our income to our agency each month to chip away at our remaining fees. That won’t be enough to wrap up the remainder if we travel this year. We have to have our fees paid in full before we can travel…and then of course there are the travel expenses. We did not have the luxury of that extra income with Harrison’s adoption…nor were we allowed a time to work out a monthly plan with our agency, but the Lord worked it out then and HE will do it now!
While this may seem like TMI to some, we hope to use this as a means of encouraging others to see that it can be done….you just look at whatever amount is due next and you pray your heart out and work your patooty off and you make it happen! You do what any parent would do for their child living an ocean away needing to get home…it takes having that mindset though. If you know you have it in you….then adoption may very well be for YOU!
bit by bit…HE will get you there! HE fund what HE favors!
So if funds are what’s stopping your family from taking the next step….please, oh please enter this giveaway!!
I have also heard from many who are opposed to fundraising for adoption. We will have to agree to disagree. I do not know many with thousands of $’s sitting in a banking account, but I do know of many orphans worldwide waiting for a mom and dad to stop letting their bank statement stand in the way of choosing to love them into their families. So, I am a cheerleader for those who have the ability to reach out to their support networks to help them to love their children home. While not everyone is meant to adopt, I do think almost everyone is interested in helping children to become united with their forever families (in some capacity)!
